The Holy Corners National Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, recognizing its historical and architectural significance for St. Louis and Missouri as well as the United States. The name of the District derives from the location of three great religious congregations -- one Reform Jewish and two Protestant Christian -- at the intersection of Kingshighway and Washington Place: Temple Israel, St. John's Methodist Church, and Second Baptist Church.
On May 16th, 2025, an EF3 tornado tore through the historic neighborhoods of St. Louis' near north side leveling buildings, causing nearly $1 billion dollars in damage to nearly 5000 buildings, including churches that had stood for over a century. The historic and sacred space at 5001 Washington Place, which has served as a center for our community for 117 years, has suffered significant and extensive structural damage to the roof and to several stained-glass windows
To restore this landmark starting with repairing the roof and closing/boarding up/repairing stained-glass windows.
There will be multiple phases to this project, with Phase 1 being the most immediate with is documented above. This facility serves the community with a food pantry, social security counseling, mentoring in job training and overall educational workshops.
